I sketch out the painting. Masking out areas allows me to work without
worrying about reserving areas. |

I'm beginning to build up the basic painting structure. I need to stay away from the center of interest after this and just build up around it. This is a very simple dark surrounding light composition with some complicated objects confusing it.
I always paint a few strong darks in the first layer or two to gauge the value of the surrounding objects by. |

I paint the ocean in blues. I tone down the far rocks with cobalt blue. |

After it's completely dried, I remove the masking. |
