Watercolor Painting Demonstration

Tidal Pool
18" x 24", Twinrocker Heavy Art paper
First, I sketch out the painting. Masking out areas allows me to work without worrying about reserving areas.

Winsor & Newton removable masking fluid.

I'm beginning to build up the basic painting structure. I need to stay away from the center of interest after this and just build up around it. This is a very simple dark surrounding light composition with some complicated objects confusing it.

I always paint a few strong darks in the first layer or two to gauge the value of the surrounding objects by.

Azo Yellow
Cobalt Blue
Quinacridone Red
Quinacridone Gold

I move around the painting more, narrowing in on the center of interest.

Darks should always be built up in several layers.

Azo Yellow
Quinacridone Red
Quinacridone Gold
Burnt Sienna
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Pthalo Blue

I paint the ocean in blues. I tone down the far rocks with cobalt blue.

Quinacridone Gold
Burnt Sienna
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Pthalo Blue

I continue moving around the painting, darkening around the center of interest.

After it's completely dried, I remove the masking.
