First, I
sketch out the painting. Masking out areas allows me to work without worrying
about reserving areas.
I let this dry completely.
I paint the sky blue, then let it dry. |

I start with
aureolin, then start bleeding in pthalo green and burnt sienna. I want
some very strong darks behind the bridge.
I add a few bright greens in the foreground,
as well as the blue sky reflection.
I dash in a little quinacridone red on the
azaleas, spritz it with a water sprayer for a misty effect.
I let this dry completely. |

I paint some
of the deeper reds, letting aureolin & quinacridone gold bleed into
the sunlit areas.
I darken behind the building and bridge,
as well as the bridge reflection. I let aureolin bleed into the darks
for an interesting texture.
I darken under the foreground azalea.
I paint the dark green shutters to give
some contrast.

I
add more darks, especially quinacridone gold and burnt sienna in the pond.
I pull quinacridone gold down in the pond's far end.
I brighten greens
with aureolin.
