Watercolor Painting Demonstration

New Orleans Dusk
8 x 10", d'Arches 140# hot press paper

Live Oak Drive II
16 x 20", d'Arches 140# hot press paper

  Colors

First, I sketch out the painting. Masking out areas allows me to work without worrying about reserving areas.

I reserve a few areas with a clear wax crayon. Don't use wax where you don't want what's underneath to be permanent. It can never be removed.

I lightly start tracing the trees in greenery in yellows and greens.

Winsor & Newton removable masking fluid.

Clear Wax Crayon

Azo Yellow
Pthalo Green
Quinacridone Gold

I start really painting the trees, adding a few deep darks. I keep in mind that the colors blue and the values lighten the farther down the drive I go.

Pthalo Green

Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Quinacridone Red

I remove some of the masking and use a wax crayon to reserve some areas.

I deepen the colors.

I add some strong darks in the foreground to give depth to the painting.
